Energize Math Time with Math Poems and Rhymes

Who doesn't love some upbeat rhymes? Try adding math poems and rhymes to energize your child (and yourself). Starting with a poem, rhyme, or song can energize and engage your child when beginning a preschool math activity.

We all want our children to succeed so let's encourage the mind set that "math is fun". Helping foster this healthy attitude toward math can help alleviate fears or apprehensions about math later on.

Whether clapping their hands or stomping their feet, children love the rhythm that comes with poems. Did I mention, rhyming patterns themselves are an important component when learning to read? Rhyming helps develop word family comprehension...but we'll save that for another time.

The poems that I'm sharing with you are very simple, easy to learn and your child will be able to perform them with a little practice and repetition. So, hop out of your chair, and have some fun...wiggle, clap and stomp, engage your whole body to tell your brain "Math is Fun!"

Everyday is something new                                    your feet to the beat, add

counting                                                                    hand movement to last

sorting                                                                       line by pointing at

adding too                                                                 yourself, then point at

Math is easy for me and you!                                   someone else)

Hand Jivin'

One, two, three, four, five           (count on one hand)

Making my hand come alive!       (wiggle fingers on open hand)

Six, seven, eight, nine, ten          (leave first hand open count on other hand)
